Graphic Novels

Slice of Life

Slice of life is a genre that is grounded in personal relationships, generally these stories are meant to be lighthearted, though of course

some will lean more into drama, just not to the point where it becomes extremely intense. Many of these stories are contemporary, but aren’t limited to that and can have crossover with

things life fantasy, sci-fi, historical, etc. The important thing is focusing on the characters and their everyday life.

Slice of Life in graphic novels:

You can get a varying of styles with slice of life, but the art isn’t meant to be as much of a spectacle as in other genres. As with all other genres the point the art is meant to help tell the story, so often I’ve noticed the art isn’t

overly complicated, since the point is the character and their relationships. As a result of this being the focus, going too over the top would overshadow the story it’s trying to tell.

Key Features:

  • Visual Storytelling: The art of slice of life graphic novels is often simple while also being visually appealing. They may use flourishes to help communicate characters feelings or make certain moments feel more impactful, but it isn’t meant to overshadow the characters and their story.
  • Characters: The focus of a slice of life is the characters themselves, as the story is driven by them and the goings on in their every day.
  • Relationships: There isn’t often a single character in a story like this, as the focus of the stories are their relationships, we are meant to see the ways their lives intertwine, and the ups and downs that come from them.
